An 11.5 kW solar array on a Saje Hill home in Calgary, from above

Solar panels for Calgary homes, installed by roofers and electricians

Calgary has the most varied roofs in Alberta and the most sunshine of any big Canadian city. We've put panels on 1950s bungalows in Renfrew and new builds in Livingston, and the job is different every time.

Why solar works in Calgary

Summer credits pay the winter bills

Calgary gets over 330 sunny days a year. We size the array to over-produce from April to September so the credits you bank at a high export rate carry you through December and January, when the panels are quiet and the furnace isn't.

This is hail country

Every panel we install is IEC 61215 rated, which means it has been tested against 25 mm hail at highway speed. Because we're roofers as well as electricians, we treat the roof under the array as the thing that actually matters.

Half your bill isn't electricity

Transmission, distribution and the city's local access fee can be half of what you pay, and they keep going up. Generating your own power shrinks the variable part of those charges and takes the sting out of the next rate decision.

We know Calgary's roofs

Our team has installed across Tuscany, Cranston, Auburn Bay, Mahogany, Evanston and Silverado.

Systems our team designed and installed before Sun’s Up, under its previous company.

Our team has installed over 100 solar systems across Calgary and area since 2019. Roof construction, snow loading and utility process vary across the region, and knowing a subdivision before you arrive is the difference between a clean install and a change order.

How it goes

From a quote to power on

  1. 01

    Tell us about the house

The address and roughly what you spend on power. We look at the roof on satellite before anyone calls you.

  2. 02

    The plan

A design sized to twelve months of your bills, with a fixed price and the year it pays for itself. If the numbers don't work for your house, we say so.

  3. 03

    Permits and the utility

We file the electrical permit, any development permit your municipality wants, and the microgeneration application with your utility.

  4. 04

    Installation

One to two days on the roof for most homes. Roofers and electricians on the same crew, so the penetrations are done the way a roofer does them.

  5. 05

    Inspection

We book it, meet the inspector, and leave the site tidy.

  6. 06

    Power on

We switch the system on, put the monitoring app on your phone, and walk you through what your bill will look like from here.

One person runs your project from the first call to the inspection, so you always know what’s next and who to ask.

Who you deal with

Tyler Marriott, founder and solar designer

The person who designs your system is the person you talk to. Tyler sizes every array himself from the customer’s own bills, and the crew that installs it is the same roofers and electricians who work on our roofing jobs. No call centre, no sales team, no subcontracted install.

We live and work here. If something needs attention in year seven, the people who put it up are the ones who come back.

Paying for it

How Calgary homeowners pay for solar

Most people don't pay for solar out of savings. Two routes cover nearly everyone, and we'll tell you which one fits before you decide anything.

Clean Energy Improvement Program

Where your municipality takes part, CEIP finances the project through your property tax bill at a fixed rate, and the balance stays with the house if you sell. Application windows open a few times a year and fill quickly, so we get your design ready ahead of one.

Financing through Financeit

Faster approval and no municipal paperwork; we guide you through the application. The goal with any loan is a payment your bill savings cover, so the system is cash-flow neutral from the first month.

Calgary solar questions

What panels do you install, and will they hold up on my roof?
Tier-one monocrystalline panels rated to IEC 61215, which covers hail, snow load and wind. The mounting matters as much as the panel: every rail is fastened to rafters or trusses, every penetration is flashed and sealed, and the roof is inspected before anything goes on it. If the shingles have under ten years left, we'll tell you to replace them first.
Can solar really cover my whole year in Calgary?
For many homes, yes. Alberta's microgeneration rules credit you for what you export, and some retailers pay a much higher rate for summer exports than you pay for winter power. Sized right, the credits you build from April to September cover the winter. We model it against your last twelve months of Enmax bills, not a provincial average.
Will the City of Calgary approve my system?
We've never had one turned down. We design inside the city's development rules and Enmax's interconnection requirements from the start, pull the electrical permit, and file the microgeneration application for you. You don't deal with the city or the utility.
Are there still rebates for solar in Calgary?
The federal Greener Homes grant closed to new applicants, but Calgary's Clean Energy Improvement Program finances up to the full project cost through your property tax bill, at a fixed rate, and the balance stays with the house if you sell. Businesses and farms can also claim the 30% federal clean technology investment tax credit. We check what you qualify for as part of the plan.
